Why the cheapest supplier is different for everyone
Your yearly cost depends on how much electricity and gas you use and where you live. The energy tax, VAT and network costs are identical across suppliers, so the difference comes down to the bare supply rate per kWh and m3, the standing charge (vastrecht) per year, and the welcome discount. At high usage the bare rate matters most; at low usage the standing charge and discount weigh more.
Solar panels change the picture entirely, because feed-in costs and compensation vary a lot between suppliers. The cheapest supplier without panels is often not the cheapest with them.
Watch the welcome discount
The supplier at the top today is often there because of a one-off welcome discount, while its rate rises after the first year. So also look at the bare rate without the discount, and set a reminder for when your contract ends. The biggest saving comes from comparing again rather than rolling over.
