There is no single average

Watch which figure someone means by "the average household", because it varies by a thousand kilowatt-hours, and that is hundreds of euros in an example calculation. CBS puts the 2026 mean at about 1,747 kWh and 928 m³, but that averages in apartments and homes with solar panels. The rule of thumb comparison sites use is around 2,400 kWh and 1,000 m³; the old standard package of 2,800 kWh and 1,200 m³ is still common too.

A one-person household sits around 1,600 kWh and 800 m³, while a family of four is closer to 3,900 kWh and 1,500 m³. A heat pump or an electric car raises your electricity use sharply. So an average tells you little about your own situation; your household size, home type and insulation decide it.

What actually drives your bill

Your yearly cost depends on how much you use and where you live. The energy tax, VAT and network costs are the same for every supplier, so the difference comes down to the bare supply rate per kWh and m3, the standing charge (vastrecht) and any welcome discount. At high usage the bare rate weighs most; at low usage the standing charge and discount weigh more.

Is my bill too high?

Compare your usage to the ranges above for your household size. If your usage is in range but your bill feels high, the likely cause is your contract: many people sit on a standard variable rate, or on a deal whose welcome discount has expired. Comparing once a year, around your contract's end date, is where most of the saving is.

If your usage itself is far above the range, look at insulation, an old heating system, or heavy electricity use from a heat pump or electric car, and consider a contract type that fits that pattern.
